Botanical and Traditional Context
The baobab tree (adansonia digitata) is found in many parts of Africa, and is commonly referred to as the ‘Upside Down Tree’ or the ‘Tree of Life’. Unusually, the majestic baobab tree consists of a stocky grey trunk, which can reach a circumference of 25m, and its branches give the impression of crown-like roots, which are pointed outwards into the air.
The baobab has stood aloft for generations. It is common for a tree to live for over 1,000 years and provide sustenance to local communities, who have used various parts of the tree to provide shelter, clothing, and food, as well as for medicinal purposes.
The fruit consists of a woody yellow-green shell with a velvet-like exterior coating, typically weighs around 1.5kgs and is roughly the size of a coconut. Opening the shell reveals a creamy-white coloured pulp.
The baobab fruit pulp is a delicacy amongst African communities, either consumed directly from the pod, mixed with water to produce a refreshing beverage, or with milk as a nutritious drink. Also the pulp is commonly found in soups and porridge.
The word ‘muvhuyu’ means baobab in African language of Venda, which is spoken in southern Zimbabwe.
